CenCom Success Story: Gunjan Banerji, The Wall Street Journal and CNBC

By Camila Brango

As Lead Writer covering live markets for The Wall Street Journal and a contributor to CNBC, Gunjan Banerji has reported on some of the biggest stories on financial markets and the economy. Before she became an award-winning financial journalist, Gunjan began to explore the world of media by attending events produced by the Center for Communication. Her journey began with active participation in our programs, which not only provided valuable insights but also helped her build the confidence to pursue a thriving and distinguished career in media.

A non-linear path
When we caught up with her in recent conversation, Gunjan generously shared recollections and advice she gained from the non-linear trajectory that often defines a career in journalism. She admitted that she initially thought of covering the financial markets as a “stepping stone” to what she believed were “more interesting, more exciting things” in the field of journalism. However, once immersed in the role, she soon fell in love with financial journalism.

The power of versatility
Gunjan offered valuable advice to aspiring journalists, emphasizing that a successful journalist must be able to tell a story in a multitude of forms. In a rapidly evolving media landscape, audiences engage with content through unconventional channels and young journalists should be able to adapt and share their stories across the many types of media and platforms.

The power of setting goals
Gunjan also encouraged young professionals to establish precise and ambitious goals. She believes this serves as a crucial foundation for cultivating the confidence needed to navigate this industry. These goals not only grant individuals the power to advocate for themselves but also serve as a testament to the hard work invested in personal growth and professional success.

“Preparation is a key ingredient to success”
Gunjan emphasized the pivotal contribution that preparation has played in her success. As a prominent figure appearing on national television, she attributes her ability to navigate such situations to diligent practice and preparation. “When you are in that first journalism job, say yes to assignments;. If someone is looking for a piece to write, raise your hand. Try to get in as many repetitions as possible because writing more is going to make you a better writer, going on TV more is going to make you a better broadcaster.”

“People want to help”
Just as Gunjan graciously took the time to engage with us and offer her advice, she hopes that more students realize there are many other people that also want to help and encourages everyone to never be afraid to ask for help.

This is not the first time Gunjan has given back to our community and shared invaluable insights she gained throughout her career and from her prior engagement with CenCom events. She participated in our 5th Annual Women + Media Career Summit, where she served as a speaker on the Panel Discussion on How to Map Your Career Journey. For those eager to delve deeper into Gunjan’s career insights, the recording of the panel is accessible on our YouTube channel.

Our heartfelt thanks to Gunjan for sharing such valuable information and perspectives on her journey through journalism and storytelling.
